Abstract

Culture is significant in the process of creating communication, and language is the key element of communication. More than ever, English and tourism have created opportunities for people from different cultures to exchange and share their cultural values directly. Therefore, intercultural communication skill is highlighted in the context of the thriving global tourism industry. When a group of 20 junior students from the Faculty of Tourism, Hanoi Open University, took two foreign guests on food tours funded by the project ‘My Hanoi’ to improve their communicative competence in English, the researchers had a great chance to observe such interesting phenomena of intercultural communication in their conversations. Those phenomena were then analyzed from the intercultural communication perspective to indicate the strengths and weaknesses of our students in communicating with people from other cultures.

Nguyen Thi Thao, Hanoi Open University, Ha Noi, Vietnam

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thao is a main lecturer at the Faculty of Tourism, Hanoi Open University. Her work involves teaching professional and specialized English for tourism and hospitality. Moreover, she participated in training courses for tourism employees and some international cooperation programs. Her research interests include teaching methodology and ESP, especially English for tourism and hospitality.

Hoang Thi Thanh, Hanoi Open University, Ha Noi, Vietnam

Ms. Hoang Thi Thanh is a lecturer at the Faculty of Tourism, Hanoi Open University. Her work involves teaching specific English courses for students of both hotel management major and tour guiding major. She has both experience teaching English and working as a professional tour guide. Her research interests include Teaching methodology, Testing and Assessment, and ESP (especially English for Tourism).

Pham Dieu Ly, Hanoi Open University, Ha Noi, Vietnam

Ms. Pham Dieu Ly is a main lecturer and the Head of the English Department, Faculty of Tourism, Hanoi Open University. Her work involves managing an ESP curriculum and teaching specialized English for tourism. Moreover, she participated in training courses for tourism employees and some international cooperation programs as both a trainer and a moderator. Her research interests include teaching methodology and ESP, especially English for tourism and hospitality.

Phan Thi Phuong Mai, Hanoi Open University, Ha Noi, Vietnam

Ms. Phan Thi Phuong Mai is a main lecturer and the Ex-vice Dean at the Faculty of Tourism, Hanoi Open University. Her teaching and management experience helps her become a competent researcher in Applied Linguistics. Her research interests include teaching methodology and curriculum development, especially in the fields of tourism and hospitality.
