Evaluating Online Applications in Teaching and Learning English for Mechanical Engineering Students at Hanoi University of Industry during COVID-19 Period

Abstract

Since the COVID-19 pandemic occurred, social fields ​​in general or education, in particular, have been affected considerably. Education, however, cannot or will not be interrupted due to this outbreak of infection. Specifically, face-to-face classes have been shifted to online ones. To maintain the effectiveness of learning and teaching English to students in the faculty of Mechanical Engineering, teachers have applied some applications, including Padlet, Google Classroom, and Quizizz. Quantitative and qualitative analysis methods will answer the research questions. The tools used for data collection are questionnaires and interviews. The authors conducted questionnaires and interviews with lecturers and second-year students of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Hanoi University of Industry. This article focuses on evaluating the application of software in the online English teaching and learning process at ​​Hanoi University of Industry. Besides, this paper demonstrates the benefits and drawbacks of these interactive applications as well as suggests some effective solutions to help teachers facilitate students in learning English more successfully.

Tran Yen Van, Ha Noi University of Industry (HaUI), Ha Noi, Vietnam

Ms. Tran Yen Van is a lecturer of English at Hanoi University of Industry, Vietnam. She has been teaching for 16 years. During those times, She has been interested in ELT, especially developing students’ proficiency in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking skills as well as communication skills. Her research interests include Computer Assisted Language Learning, Cognitive Linguistics, Educational Technology, and ELT Methodology.

 

 

Phu Thi Nhung, Ha Noi University of Industry (HaUI), Ha Noi, Vietnam

Ms. Phu Thi Nhung has been teaching at Hanoi University of Industry, Vietnam for 21 years. She has taught the language at various levels. Her research interests include Computer Assisted Language Learning, Cognitive Linguistics, Educational Technology, and ELT Methodology.

 

Le Thu Huong, Ha Noi University of Industry (HaUI), Ha Noi, Vietnam

Ms. Le Thu Huong has been teaching at Hanoi University of Industry, Vietnam for 3 years. While working there, her main interests were ESP, ELT, especially developing students’ proficiency in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking skills as well as communication skills. Her research focuses on Computer Assisted Language Learning, Cognitive Linguistics, Educational Technology, and ELT Methodology.

 

Duong Thi Thuy Linh, Ha Noi University of Industry (HaUI), Ha Noi, Vietnam

Ms. Duong Thi Thuy Linh has been teaching at Hanoi University of Industry, Vietnam for 2 years. She is learning MA in Teaching English as a foreign language at University of Languages and International Studies - Hanoi National University. She has been interested in investigating young learners’ learning and language extracurricular activities and personalized learning.
